ABOUT BIA WEST MICL

Bia West MICL Cocoa Farmers and Marketing Union is a farmer-based organization advancing cocoa farming, education, technology, youth empowerment and sustainable community development across the Bia West District.

Founded on 15 March 2015, the Union was legally registered on 14 December 2015 under registration number WR/SD/AC/452. From an initial 29 societies and 1,051 farmers, it has grown into a strong network of 34 societies and 10,860 members.

WHAT WE DO

Supporting Farmers. Strengthening Communities.

Bia West MICL combines sustainable cocoa-farmer support with practical investments in education, health, water, sanitation, digital learning and community capacity building.

Sustainable Cocoa & Farmer Support

Farmers receive training and support in good agricultural practices, farm maintenance, pest and disease control, environmental protection, occupational safety and responsible use of agricultural inputs.

Education & Learner Support

The Union has supported school construction and refurbishment, educational materials, teacher accommodation and motivation, scholarships, and transport assistance for learners travelling long distances.

Health, Water & Sanitation

Community interventions include health centres and CHPS compounds, accommodation for health workers, facility refurbishment and potable solar-powered water systems benefiting all 34 societies.

ICT, STEAM & Youth Skills

The Elluokrom Smart ICT Centre expands access to digital literacy, coding, robotics, STEAM, innovation and practical technology skills for students, young people and community members.

A Community Investment Built to Last

Established on 17 January 2024 with support from Mondelez International / Cocoa Life, the Smart Printing Press generates income to help sustain the Elluokrom Smart ICT Centre while providing useful digital and printing services to the community.

Elluokrom Smart ICT Centre

A community learning hub helping students and residents build practical skills in ICT, digital literacy, STEAM, coding, robotics, innovation and invention.

Smart Printing Press

A community service and revenue-generating unit located within the ICT Centre, helping support the Centre’s financial sustainability and continued learning activities.

Progress Measured in People and Possibility

From 1,051 founding farmers to 10,860 members, Bia West MICL has grown into a strong farmer-based organization. Its current membership includes 6,525 women and 4,335 men, reflecting the important role of women in the Union and Ghana’s cocoa sector.

Smart ICT Centre and Printing Press Established at Elluokrom

Bia West MICL, with support from Mondelez International / Cocoa Life, established two connected projects to advance digital learning and community sustainability.

Printing, design and digital services provide useful support to residents while generating revenue to help sustain learning at the Smart ICT Centre.

Support from Mondelez International / Cocoa Life helped establish the Elluokrom Smart ICT Centre and Smart Printing Press. The Union’s history also records collaboration with the Bia West District Assembly, Child Rights International, Solidaridad, AgroEco, Abantu International, Care International and Fairtrade Africa.
